Description in brief

The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is located near to the old gold mines and slag heaps – on land that is steeped in history. The on-site electronic visitor information system forms an integral part of a stirring exhibition on race separation and discrimination in South Africa. By listening to a guidePORT audio receiver, each visitor can learn everything worth knowing about a seemingly never-ending collection of exhibits both inside the museum and in the grounds. Multimedia documentations take visitors “by the hand” and escort them to the very depths of this dark period in South Africa’s history. The acoustic accompaniment to the exhibits relayed through the guidePORT system adds to the dramatic staging of this highly contentious topic.

Requirements

Presentation theme:

extremely controversial subject-matter demanding high standards of serious acoustic implementation

multilingual (there are 11 official languages in South Africa)

Location:

perfect harmony of indoor and outdoor technology

Technology:

easy, non-distracting operation of device for visitors from different countries

Implementation

The visitors’ guides have been compiled in 6 languages. 50 visitors can be equipped with guidePORT receivers at a time – the user-friendly, 4-button model with automatic playback was chosen for this purpose. All recordings have been created with particular attention to sensitivity and impact, which has often been praised by very impressed visitors on leaving the exhibition.
In all, 50 receivers, 28 identifiers, 7 double-cell transmitters, 28 aerials and the Statistic Manager software tool from Sennheiser have been installed at the museum.

Benefits for visitors

automatic triggering of playback reduces operating effort and eliminates distraction from the contents of the exhibition

visitors with disabilities can also experience the exhibition without any difficulty

all recordings of particular interest can be replayed/repeated several times

Benefits for operators

simple system programming

Statistic Manager software tool provides a perfect overview of visitor behaviour

invisible installation of identifiers and aerials, integrated in the decor of the Museum

recordings in 6 languages cater for large numbers of visitors
